Moving On

Hi Everyone,

I will no longer be posting to this blog. It has become difficult to post items during my work day and my after work hours are devoted to my daughter.

But do not become discouraged I offer an alternative! I am now chatting. I will be on my Google Chat account, sumerian2@gmail.com during my normal work day (Mon-Fri 8:30a-4p). So please consider adding me to your buddy list and looking me up whenever you need research help. I've also posted my commitment calendar online at http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=sumerian2%40gmail.com. This way you'll know when I'm teaching, doing reference, or going to be embedded in your department.

A new approach to the way libraries should be designed led to the Idea Store in east London. Its architect David Adjaye is the youngest to be nominated for the Stirling Prize.

Roll Over Beethoven!

In June I posted a piece called "You never know what you'll find at the library" about an archivist at the Anna Amalia Library in Weimar, Germany who discovered an unknown Bach aria that is over 300 years old.

Not to be outdone Beethoven's ghost must have done a little shaking of the stack dust motes at the Palmer Theological Seminary library in Philadelphia because archivist Heather Carbo has uncovered a lost working manuscript of one of Beethoven's final compositions estimated to be worth $2 million!

Sometimes weeding can be a good thing.

For some of the latest information on blogs, see "The Passion of the Blog" by Irene E. McDermott in Searcher: The Magazine for Database Professionals 13, no. 4 (April 2005): 8-13. Here you will find suggested political blogs, search engines to locate blogs, and sites that "pick up the RSS feeds of your favorite blogs or news outlets and bring them all to one place for your perusal."

To find out if UB owns the journal, Searcher, in an electronic format go to the library's homepage, ublib.buffalo.edu, center of the page towards the bottom click "Electronic Journals". From here enter the name of the journal in the textbox and click search. A list of databases and the years covered will appear. Select the database that covers the year you need, in this case 2005 and follow the directions to get to the article.

I ran across a fantastic website devoted to making a difference worldwide. United Planet offers quests that impact children, the environment, homelessness, health care, the elderly, and education. The American Library Association is holding their annual conference this week and next week I'm putting the finishing touches on an article about concept mapping in library instruction. Nazification of the U.S.: Coalition calls for "Parental Input" in Library Purchases

I know the title sounds harsh but I'm walking on the dark side for a moment.

North Carolina Representative Walter B. Jones (R) has introduced H.R. 2295, the Parental Empowerment Act of 2005” in Congress. If passed, H.R. 2295 will prohibit a state from receiving federal education funds less the state has certain policies in place that give parents a role in deciding what books are purchased for school libraries or for use in teaching children. My concern is that parents will be getting their "talking points" and reading list suggestions from organizations like Traditional Values or the Chrisitan Coalition. More on this story...
